Bolzano is one of the wealthiest cities in italy, located in Trentino alto Adige it is a stunning city in a valley of beautiful mountains.
Long streets lined with arcades, breathtaking views and a very clean town rich of new buildings and architectures is what it can be found.
If you would like to spend a day in total relax in total contact with the nature and harmonious squares like Piazza Delle Erbe and the nice streets with flowers go to Bolzano.
This region of Italy is famous for some of the most beautiful mountains on the planet called Dolomiti.
Bolzano is the biggest city you can visit in that area! There are awesome tourist locations for everyone who likes the mountains such as: Cortina d’Ampezzo, Soraga di Fassa, Canazei, Moena and many more.
Piazza Walther is the main square of Bolzano, the roof of the dome is something absolutely characteristic and it looks like green and golden.
The bell tower was added to the dome in a second time and it makes this architecture very interesting, and nice.
The bell tower has 25 bells and it often plays nice melodies, inside of the dome you can find many fresco paintings made by students of Giotto.
Right after the dome and the main square you want to go to Piazza Delle Erbe, this is another great square where most of the people meet up and chat with friends.
There you can always find a market and buy fruits and vegetables directly from the farmers. The square has also the Neptune fountain, ranked in the top 100 best fountains in the world.
Bolzano like Bologna has streets and Portici where you can walk without getting wet and mostly admire their beauty.
Not too far from Bolzano, you can find a stunning castle called Castel Firmiano, the castle is located i a breathtaking view location and it is considered one of the top castles in the region.
Bolzano is a city that stands in between a valley of mountains, so technically you can’t hike in Bolzano!
All the cities around downtown have cable car cabins and plenty of mountains you can go on a hike.
If you like hiking Bolzano is probably the best place on earth, there are so many breathtaking “Passi” and awesome roads that go on top of fantastic mountains and hiking trails.
The Messner museum and the Ötzi are also a must-visit, ötzi is the oldest man on earth that got preserved in the ice.
Some other monuments and museum worth a visit are:
Bolzano is also fantastic during Christmas, it is a city where mountains and snow are pretty much always present and Christmas markets are amazing.
South Tyrolean cuisine, is a delicious mix of flavors from Tyrolean cuisine and those of Italian cuisine.
We are in a mountainous area so stuff like polenta and hot meals dishes are quite popular.
In Bolzano, because it is located in a valley you will be able to taste food from the Italian culture mixed up with the mountain culture.
One of the most famous dishes from Bolzano is called Canederli, you could probably find bad and frozen ones in your local store in whatever country you are.
The Canederli are boiled dumplings filled in with many different things, it could be meat, cheese, vegetable, pumpkin, etc…
Right after the Canederli, it will be rare not to find Speck, speck is a particular kind of ham that gets smoked and served with bread or crostini.
Speck is the better version of traditional prosciutto Crudo to me.

Bolzano is one of the best-ranked cities in italy because of the high quality of life. If you like nature, hiking and also having a beautiful and modern town to hang out Bolzano is for you.
Both in the summers and in the winter Bolzano and the area around are interesting.
Val di Fassa, Val di Non, and all of these valleys are very close to this city and you can visit the top of some of the nicest mountains in the world.
The city center is well preserved, super clean and with flowers all year long.
In Bolzano, they are speaking both Italian and German, in Alto Adige instead, (still in Italy) the main language is German only.
There are several interesting museums also worth a visit, my top choice is Ötzi museum. You can easily move around the city by walking and go on top of certain mountains taking the cable car cabins all over the region.
Lakes and river are also beautiful and you should definitely spend some days in this area that’s for sure.
